Not targeting my blog demographic here, I imagine, but tonight's opening night in the NBA. I know soccer's 'the beautiful game,' but, at it's highest, most artistic, basketball's hard to beat, IMO.
GO LAKERS! (yeah, let the hate begin... to your right is a pic of the Stephanie Meyer of basketball :)

LOL. I don't watch sports, generally speaking (I know, I know, SHUN!!!! SHUN!!!) but the "Stephanie Meyer of basketball" had me chuckling, even though I have no idea who that is.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so Kobe is the Stephanie Meyer of basketball.
ReplyDeleteI need to adopt a new team since we lost our team. It SO won't be the Lakers, though. Boo! Boo! I used to really like the Mavericks... even when the Sonics were around. I guess I'll go to the next closest franchise. There isn't anything wrong with the Trailblazers per se. I went to a game last season with courtside seats and nearly got their mascot on my lap when he overshot the hoop during a half-time slam dunk. Still, they're not the home team, you know? Sucks being a basketball fan in a baseball state.
My brother is a Lakers fan and that's where the bulk of the hate comes from because we have a healthy competition going on. (Secretly, the Lakers do sort of rock. Shh. Let's keep that on the low low.)
Oh and soccer? The beautiful game? Please... anyone who says that hasn't seen enough of the old school dunk competitions when Michael was playing. Jordan could fly. Soccer. Bah! Leads to riots and fights half the time.
ReplyDeleteMy husband can't stand the Lakers. I personally don't have a stake in basketball, but my husband loves the game.
ReplyDeleteWendy, yeah, it was a bummer when the Sonics left town... miss the good ole days of Shawn Kemp and The Glove...
ReplyDeleteLT, Kobe's like SM, IMO, b/c people tend to love him or hate him.
Bethany, Texas is a lot like Oregon -- not too many fans of those LA teams :)
In all honesty, we hadn't had a "team" in a long time, though. The Sonics seemed to specialize in over-priced, whiny, ball hogs. I once saw them play the Mavericks back when Nash was there, and cheered for the Mavericks the whole way. The game was amazing. The Mavs won in the last few seconds. It was poetry.
ReplyDeleteYeah, none of the Sonics wanted to be here anyway, but still.... baseball isn't high enough octane. Soccer isn't high enough scoring. Football is fun if you're actually there. Nothing beats basketball. Well, hockey comes close. I like violence... among the players... not among the fans.
My husband and his family are hard core Jazz fans, but the Jazz really aged without getting in fresh new blood. It feels like they have a team of newbs now. I don't know... we'll see.
I'm with L.T. I have no idea who that is, but I like the Meyer analogy.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't even realized that you lived in Portland. How is it that you like the Lakers? Just curious. I'm an air force brat so I've lived all over too.
ReplyDeleteThe Trailblazers really are a good team--not the most exciting, but Paul Allen keeps shaking things up with his draft picks. I haven't paid enough attention to them the last two seasons. (I've been busy.) I felt guilty when I was courtside (tickets from the husband's work) and I was like "Who are all these guys?" Maybe this is the season when I can really dive back into watching. The husband would like that.
Yeah,I'm definitely a bit of an outcast being a Lakers fan in Portland :) -- I grew up my early years in Sunnyvale, CA (as a Navy brat) and, of course, I had to choose the winning teams as my favorites (49ers, the Bash Brothers A's, and Showtime :)...
ReplyDeleteAnd Steve Nash... one of the funnest guys to watch and, I imagine, to play with.
I heart Steve Nash. It's probably really girly and odd, but I do. He's a really nice guy from what I've seen. There are just some players that you wish never aged. I saw a picture of Michael Jordan recently, and I was horrified that he's gotten so much older. (I'm not sure why, but he wasn't supposed to get any older--well, at least not before we could clone him.)
ReplyDeleteBasketball... my eyes are glazing over. Phew! All this just sailed over my head. The only thing I can say is... I rooted for the Bulls when MJ led 'em. That, and the "Jazz" name made a whole lot more sense when they were in the Big Easy, back in the '70s. When I think of Utah, I don't think of jazz - no offense, Jen, wherever you are. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI agree on the "Jazz" thing. It's come up between the husband and I. I totally don't understand why the name goes with the team.
ReplyDeleteHa ha -- same case w/ the Lakers -- originally from Minneapolis -- not too many lakes in LA that I know of ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm a baseball or hockey fan myself. I can't get into basketball, even though it's entertaining. Same thing with football really.
ReplyDelete@Wendy -- The way I understand it, there are contract clauses that force the name to travel with the team no matter where they go. Hence why there's the L.A. Lakers and the Utah Jazz when neither name makes sense in the current locale.
Poor Stephanie.
ReplyDeleteWhat poor company you've put her in ;^)
@Matthew-- That makes sense. I wonder how much else is contracted like colors or numbers. I know all the Utah teams share similar color schemes now, but I believe it was all based on the Jazz.
ReplyDeleteYou know I've grown so accustomed to the Lakers being in L.A. I'd totally forgotten they were a transplant too. You'd think that would be the obvious one.
Kobe is the rock star of basketball right now. I don't think Stephanie suffers in the comparison. ;)
I agree about the name of the "Jazz". It should have been changed. But, I love the Jazz and no matter what they're name is I'm a huge fan. I'm not into football much, but basketball is a whole other thing!
ReplyDeleteYeah - Go DDDDD-etroit Pistons! Woot woot!!!
ReplyDeleteLakers...ick. Sorry. They're like the Yankees of baseball - and don't get me started on that. Go Phillies!
Ok, I can soooo play the dude here. Kobe Bryant, the Stephanie Meyers of Basketball??? Puuulease!!! Its RocketBall all the way, baby. Bethany-We are Houston Rockets fans (it doesn't matter if you're not into the game, you have to support the home team).
ReplyDeleteBasketball... I believe the game was invented by Canadian James Neismith. Darling little game-really-not sure why it didn't take off here. (Perhaps it had something to do with the shiny little shorts?)
ReplyDeleteGO CANUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Stephenie Meyer of b-ball. Priceless. Way to put it in terms us writer folk can understand.
ReplyDeleteI actually appreciate The Rockets more than almost any other team. They've got some great hustle players (much as I despise Dukies, you can't have a better teammate than Shane Battier) and they've had more than their share of bad luck.
ReplyDeleteSteph, yeah, definitely the Yankees of basketball... and I'll double up on the Go Phils :)
Deb, hockey never much enthralled me (at least via TV), but there are few better spectacles than a live hockey match, IMO.
Jen, I really wish John Stockton and KM had won a ring. They were just around at the wrong time, unfortunately.
Bane, they were robbed...
ReplyDeleteNow Bane, did you have to include a picture of them against the Spurs? Was that nice?
ReplyDeleteOk, JK, but still...
Sorry, Regina, it just happened to be the first one I stumbled upon ;)
