Stabbing Pain

Two weeks ago I was off the grid intentionally. Last week, not so much. Went on a flight, calf swelled. Not sure why. Couldn't possibly be a DVT. I'm young, in good shape. A few days later. Go to the ER. Admitted to the hospital for a PE (clot in leg traveled to lung). Learned what stabbing pain was. Back on my feet. Feeling fine now, though I'm stuck taking rat poison (blood thinner) for several months. Good times. Moral of the story. No frickin clue. Walk around, I guess. Have a doctor for a wife. Be thankful for dilaudid (10 times stronger than morphine). Anyhoo, still somewhat off the grid, but mostly b/c work's now kicking my non-life-insurable ass. Just updating, and posting occasionally over at the Alliterati.

  1. WOW, that's what it was? I'm sorry you had to go through that. My dad had several PEs. Glad you got the appropriate help and are on the mend. And that you're okay.

  3. Oh, my gosh, Bane! I'm so glad you are okay. I almost lost my husband 7 years ago to a blood clot in his leg. Take care.

  8. That's no excuse for stepping away from your blog. Slacker.

Glad you're feeling better. I'm sure this experience will find a way to materialize in one of your novels. I bet you can write a kick ass scene where a character experiences stabbing pain.

  11. Scary stuff, but I'm glad you're okay! Health is one of those things I really think most people take for granted until it's gone. I know I do.

  16. Wow! Bane, that's scary. I'm glad you're okay. IN YOUR LUNG??? Gah! That sounds like something that should be freaking painful beyond comprehensible pain. Wow... My grandmother had the same thing with a blood clot in her leg after a flight. I didn't know the two happened as cause and effect very often.

*hugs* to you. I hope you never go off the radar for something as scary as that again.

  17. Bane that sucks... My husband had some strange unexplained things this year too. MERSA, and two weeks later an infection so bad he was hospitalized for three days. Get better and it's lucky you caught it.

  18. So sorry to hear that. I'm glad you got to the hospital, got a correct diagnosis and appropriate medicine (a.k.a. rat poison). Take care of yourself and get better!

  19. Good that you're back on your feet, Bane. My grandfather had to take blood thinners...he never said anything about them being "rat poison" but he did call getting his blood taken "going to the vampires" or something like that...he callled the people taking the blood "vampires".

  20. Jen, sorry to hear about your husband. Hope everything's on the mend now.

    Regina, thanks.

Bethany, sounds like your grandfather had it rougher. I just have to get my finger pricked to test my blood levels. The drug they use is called coumadin, which is (or perhaps was) used in rat poison, though I'm not sure what the dosing differences are :).

  21. I can't believe that happened to you! I'm so glad to hear that you are doing better. I've flown to India a few times and never even worried about things like that. I thought that only happened to old people.
