Recently, I read a published novel where MC's mother got shot (sacrificing herself for MC); a few paragraphs later (after MC was done escaping), MC pretty much says (I pushed Mom and Dad from my thoughts - yes, her father had been killed, too, in the interim). This may have been bearable (though further justification for MC's disregard would have been nice - the character had not been built up as a heartless sociopath), but a couple paragraphs after that, she's making out with her boy toy.
Kill your parents if you need to get them out of the way, but don't breeze over the emotional reaction. I'm all for pacing, but don't sacrifice reality in the situation.
Helps to remember Newton's 3rd Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Sure, emotional physics play out a bit differently - you can hedge here and there - but keep it real.
